Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

This is a great game! I played God of War 1-2 on PS2 and I loved them, then i bough an Xbox and wanted a game, like GoW. I ordered Castlevania and got it in a week (I live in Hungary). The game is awesome: the graphic is beautiful and the whole atmosphere is brilliant. I will replay this game many times...

For someone who loved playing God of War on PS2 and is looking for the same type of game on Xbox 360, this is the one. Slash 'em all and solve puzzles, incredible graphics and the story is very good too. Recommendable

Enjoyed it more than GOW3

When the game first hit the shelves I didn't know what to think, mainly because I have never heard about the game until I saw it in the shops. I can tell you now that this is an authentic action game. I don't know how many action games newcomers will actually enjoy this game, but all the action game maniacs will really love Castlevania. I can assure you that if you like the action genre you will definitely not be disappointed.

A Slow Starter

4

At first Lords of Shadow seems to be just another brawler in the same vein as God of War or Dante's Inferno, but once you start to breach the surface it really comes into its own. Both the story and action develop in wholly unique directions, creating a meaningful platform for the violence and driving the narrative along in the process. The voice-acting is superb, particularly that of Patrick Stewart, and the imagery is stunning. Were it not for the slow start it would undoubtedly be a Five, but as it stands it's a commendable Four and an unmissable game for fans of fantasy action.

At first when I saw the game I wasn't too sure. But once I started playing Castlevania: Lords of Shadows it turned out to be quite an enjoyable game, the game itself is quite long (spanning up to 12 chapters), very nice visuals & scenery, some amazing boss fights against titans, some fun & challenge puzzles, trials to test yourself & simple achievements to add to your gamerscore. What makes this Castlevania different to past titles & being 3D is that this is re-telling the story anew, so people new to the series can start somewhere.

Count Dracula, I Presume?

Fair warning: if you don't already need to sleep with the light on, Konami's latest action adventure will make you afraid of the dark. And of vampires. And of giant pigs, actually. Castlevania: Lords of Shadows sees the classic action horror series getting a very modern makeover. Under the watchful eye of Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima, the latest episode in the adventures of those ghoul-busting Belmonts lets you engage in as much blistering combat and nail-biting platforming as you could possibly ask for. Gabriel Belmont's the hero this time, and he's on a mission to wipe out a series of big-time gothic baddies in order to bring his lovely wife back from the dead. The story gets tangled up in itself quite early on, but the low-down is pretty simple: if you're a werewolf, a witch, a ghoul or a vampire, an angry man with a lot of deadly weapons is probably going to be after you pretty sharpish. Occasional confusion aside, the plot zips along in a muddle of lavish cut-scenes, and with vocal talent from the likes of Sir Patrick Stewart and Robert Carlyle, the acting's top notch even if the script isn't. Luckily, nobody plays Castlevania games for the scripts, and this one is knee-deep in gory action instead. If you liked the massive combo-rich battling of God of War and the zippy clambering around on rocks of Uncharted 2, you're in for a treat: Lords of Shadows blends both elements brilliantly as it sends you on an epic crusade against the forces of evil that will easily take you 20 hours to see through to the end. Both fighting and climbing are enhanced by Belmont's handy upgradeable Combat Cross, which doubles as a whip attack and grappling hook, and with giant beasts to take control of, a huge chunk of Medieval Europe to explore in glorious HD visuals, two kinds of magical attacks to get to grips with, and all the forces of chaos itching to give you a shoeing, it's hard to know where to start. If there's a weak spot to this blindingly smart package, it's probably the puzzles. Castlevania fans love their intricacy, and Lords of Shadows will short-change them a little on this front. Most of the brain-teasers you encounter tend to be in the form of locked doors or broken machinery, and while there are the odd clever moment, you'll hardly have anything thrown at you that taxes your noggin that heavily - and, towards the end, you might feel you've seen each puzzle more than once. Luckily, you'll have no time to dwell on that kind of disappointment, because elsewhere the game is astonishingly generous, piling on creative boss battles and huge levels, and chucking in a number of reasons to play the whole thing through a second time. Despite its constant beauty and a handful of great actors, Castlevania: Lords of Shadows can't compete with God of War or Uncharted 2 when it comes to atmosphere. But if you're after a huge adventure that looks as good as anything out there and plays as frantically as the best fighting games, you'd have to be crazy to miss out on this.
