Challenging and rewarding

5

Dark Souls provides a tough challenge for anyone who is willing to accept it. The game is definitely hard but it never feels cheap. Mindless button mashing will lead to certain death, so every move must be thought out before being executed and no enemy must be underestimated. The reward is a feeling of true achievement that not many games offer nowadays.

simply amazing

If you offer yourself to this Dark Souls and refuse to quit before you understand the mechanics, you will simply become addicted to this game. The first hour or so can be very difficult. YouTube is your friend if you get stuck. However, stick with it and you will be rewarded with a smug grin of satisfaction! I'm on my fourth playthrough now and my character is a machine! I don't know of any other game I have played through four times, enough said.

Worth it! The game's complexity and versatility stands out immediately, the Japanese guys have done a good job! Beautiful graphics, sounds and story. It took me a while to get to grips with it, but now I can't put it down. The menu management is quite interesting, especially to people accustomed to similar games. The PvP system needs to be adapted slightly to avoid having to go through paths again (just because the opponent's character was killed by a burglar). The solution is to not be in party chat to talk to friends. He who loves games, feel free to get involved!

All I can say is wow! This game is incredibly frustrating and soul-destroying, but also arguably the most rewarding game you will ever play. The effort put into this game oozes quality and shows. Once you start, you will be hooked and I can honestly say that dying has never been so much fun.

WHEN at first you don't succeed

Yes there is a lot of dying involved, yes you are incredibly vulnerable and yes it all seems so very pointless. Welcome to the first 5 hours of Dark Souls. I wanted to to say before I begin that I have never written a review before, I have played hundreds of games across a dozen genres and I have never been compelled to write a review until I played this. Dark Souls is a fantastic game, let me start by saying that, it is expansive, unique, satisfying, beautifully put together and genuinely compelling. But, to enjoy any of those features it demands that you submit to it. What I mean by that is that the game goes against all the tenants of modern gaming (no saves, no health regeneration, no PAUSE!) and unless you embrace Dark Souls' way of thinking you will never understand it, let alone enjoy it and it deserves to be understood and enjoyed because what it is doing is truly commendable. What seems like pointless difficulty and repetition is just the game breaking you down, breaking years of bad habits learned at the feet of games like Dante's Inferno and COD. Dark Souls is trying to show you another way of gaming that isn't about button bashing or being quick on the trigger but rather is about cunning and patience and self control. It will wear you down until the prospect of pressing anything other than block at the sight of an enemy will seem like madness, and if you persevere you will love it for it. I was ready to quit after my first 5 hours, I'd screamed and kicked but once I came to some simple realisations: that dying is an inconvenience, not an end, that ending a fight unscathed is more important than ending it quickly and that a victory earned is so much more satisfying than a victory button mashed, then I realised that Dark Souls embodies the kind of challenge that is too often missing from modern games and equally absent is the pure satisfaction you get from rising to it. To sum up, yes it is hard, yes it demands patience and thought and yes there will be times when you just want to cry but what it offers in return is the most genuine sense of satisfaction in a game that you have felt in a long long time.

It's been a while now since I've played this game and I've played many game afterwards. But it is this game that is still on my mind as the best game of the last year(s). Looking forward to the new add-on.

Dark Souls is a game full of fantasy and joy. Speaking for me, this game is the best RPG I have ever played. I was a huge fan of Diablo II and this game is some how very alike. You have to make your way through undead corpses and skeletons to get to the enormous bosses before passing to another stage. All the physics and enemy movements are astonishing, as is the art design. The game producers must be proud of their minds. The gameplay is awesome, you can experience different combos movements depending on the weapon you are using. It isn't an easy game. You've to be comfortable with the game to take some risks and advance throughout. In the beginning you'll die a lot, this is not a game for timid players. If you like to cast spells towards your enemies and stick a sword in their chest, then I've got to tell you, this is your game!

Dark Souls is a nice game. It's not much more than that. The game-play is a bit difficult to understand, and the game is pretty hard too. I like the idea of making a game that will make you break a sweat, and not just mash the same buttons over and over, but it feels like there should be a little more guidance at least in the early parts.
