XCOM Enemy Unknown

A fantastic turn based game. Each soldier has 2 action points 1 to move and 1 to fire, but both points can be used to move your soldier further. At the cost of being able to fire that turn. All your soldiers start out as rookies with no special abilities other than a grenade. When your soldier levels up for the first time a class is randomly selected for that soldier (Assault,Support,Heavy or Sniper) when you level up after that you get to choose one of two different abilities each level to tailor that soldier to your preferred tactics. After a fight is finished you get to start research projects, build your base, recruit new soldiers and select your soldiers equipment loadout for the next missions. The game feels really simplistic without being dumbed down too much. But i would like to have the option to build more complex bases and in multiple countries and field more squads. The airborne UFO interception part of the game could also be more complex. All in all its a really addictive game that i would recommend to any turn based enthusiast.

A classic then and a classic now

If you remember playing the original, you would do well getting XCOM Enemy Unknown too. The plot line is much of the same - aliens attacking Earth and you command defenses against them, eventually taking the fight to the mothership (that's enough spoilers for now). This is turn-based strategy in a beautiful form. Many decision must be made as to what must be researched, built, sold and equipped and that's before the fighting gets started. The combat is great and works well. My only quibble would be that when aliens pop into view they get to move into cover first before you get an attack - slightly unfair advantage but then your squad do get ability buffs so I guess it evens out. All in all, if you like turn-based strategy games this is up there with the best.

XCOM

XCOM Enemy Unknown is a superb game, something the Xbox desperately needed, a decent turn based strategy game, with resource management to boot. Very reminiscent of Syndicate and Jagged Alliance 2 on the PC from years back. Well worth it at this price, doesn't disappoint! Highly recommend.

SImply put, brilliant game.

This game is fantastic, if you are after a short, sharp review to make up your decision, buy this game. In a market full of bland FPS games and cover shooters, this game brings an exciting tactical turn-based game mechanic. The game control compliments the urgency and anticipation of the games tone. There are some RPG elements thrown into the mix, which in the current gaming market smacks of throwing it in for the sake of it, however, it is completely justified and adds a new dimension to the game. As you are able to personalise every team member you take into battle, there is a real sense of loss when one of your favourite team member takes a fatal blow. If you are bored of the current waves of bland, generic games and want to try something a bit different, with a bit of a retro flavour, you need to buy this title.

Solid Copy!

As a fan of the original UFO/XCOM series I was at first sceptical to this new stab at the game. Which was partly why I've waited on purchasing it. Wow! Having now played through most of the game I can say with confidence that it is as good if not better than the old games from the early nineties. There is so much content and strategic/tactical possibilities that a couple of friends and I can almost daily recount our latest hair raising ground missions and lesser-of-two-evils decisions in HQ and we are playing quite different games. I've spent upward of 70 hours with the game and am already looking forward to having another go at it! This is definitely Game of the Year 2012 from me, even beating out Telltales fantastic episodic The Walking Dead.

Though the strategy part feels a bit too simplified, it was quite captivating and definitely worth playing through.

I don't usually buy games that I don't know much about, but good reviews and the need to play something different led me to giving XCOM Enemy Unknown a chance. This is the first time I have played a turn-based strategy game, and immediately it reminded me of a cross between Chess and the brilliant Commandos 2 on the PS2, but with aliens instead of Nazis. The game felt very accessible to newcomers like me. A quick tutorial mission set me up nicely for the tasks ahead. Several missions in and game forces you to think differently as you face newer and tougher enemies. A wrong move and the game will punish you, and I have never felt more dejected and demoralised in a game when two of my most experienced soldiers died due to a strategic error. The base management part of the game is good without being too in depth, but the real meat of the game is on the battlefield. Apart from the game being punishing and at the same time rewarding, each battle leaves me on the edge of my seat, and it's also very addictive. It's a great game.

The best strategy game on Xbox

I've been waiting for some good strategy games on consoles for a while. Finally I get what I wanted. XCOM combines the best of the resource management and turn-based tactical combat genres, into an awesome sci-fi story.
