A Castle In The Sky

Established 1985, Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation studio that has produced over 40 films over the course of its history. Five of these films rank amongst the ten highest-grossing films made in Japan. In addition to the studio’s various films, it has also been involved in the creation of several video games.

Some of their biggest films are My Neighbour Totoro (1988), Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), Princess Mononoke (1997), Spirited Away (2001), and Howl’s Moving Castle (2004). However, there are many more that could be added to this list.

The large-framed spirit from My Neighbour Totoro became the mascot of the company not long after its release. This film follows two young sisters, Satsuke and Mei, as they attempt to settle into an old country house. As they explore their new home, they start to befriend various spirits from the neighbouring forest, including Totoro.

Despite Totoro being the mascot for the studio, it is Spirited Away that is the biggest film release in their catalogue. Telling the story of ten-year-old Chihiro, the film tracks the young girl after her parents are turned into pigs and trapped in a seemingly abandoned amusement park that functions as a resort for spirits. In this realm, Chihiro meets Haku, who explains that she needs to work for a witch called Yubaba to free her parents.
