The Tree of Life

5 stars out of a maximum of 5

The Tree of Life is a stunning piece of cinema that will probably need some time to find its audience. This movie is a philosophical tale on a scale that hasn't been seen since 2001: A Space Odyssey, and it has the potential to polarize its audience in the same way as Kubrick's inevitable classic. Director Terrence Malick takes us on a journey to the essence of our existence, and tells this on both an intimate level with a family drama, and on an epic cosmic scale, with some of the most dazzling and moving images ever entrusted onto celluloid. An incredibly moving blend of sound and picture, that is bound to keep people mesmerized until the final scene, but also some to shake their heads in apathy. Mind you, this is not a movie for the masses, but for those who are open to its puzzling complexity, The Tree of Life may be an experience of a lifetime. And perhaps the Answer to the Question of Life itself.
