Disney's Into the Woods is based on the Tony®-winning original musical by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim. It is a modern day twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and The Beanstalk and Rapunzel - all tied together by an original story. It surrounds a baker and his wife's quest to break a witch's curse in order to start a family. I watched this film as a bit of a time-killer, expecting nothing more than a different take on Grimm stories, with no idea on the background. I didn't realise this was a complete musical, and by the end of the first song (around 15 minutes), I was convinced that I would love the entirety of it. James Corden really stood out for me, personally, though Anna Kendrick and Meryl Streep were outstanding (not to mention all the others). Stephen Sondheim is a musical genius (including Sweeney Todd), and missing this would be a crime.
