Based on the Sebastian Faulks novel and set in the First World War, Birdsong follows the 20 year old hero Stephen Wraysford who finds his true love on a trip to Amiens. She's married and the wife of a wealthy textile baron. Wraysford convinces her to leave this life but things do not go according to plan. He is haunted by this doomed affair and carries it with him to the trenches of war. They endure many narrow escapes from the Nazis before they reach a sea port. Their attempted journey across the Channel is fraught with many dangers and an unexpected turn of events.

Excellent
An excellently written film. All historical allusions were accurate, and the whole story really put you in the places/people's lives/situations, so you were able to 'feel' how it might have been at that time for people in differing situations. I shall watch this one again.
