Sir Gawain is alone in accepting the challenge, decapitating the towering stranger's head with one strike. The Green Knight then picks up his severed head, climbs back upon his horse, and rides out of Camelot. The following winter, Gawain dutifully sets off on his solitary quest for the Green Knight...
