Star Fleet X Bomber: The Complete Series
Many moons ago as a younger man I watched Star Fleet it was a cross between Thunderbirds and Japanese animé. In many ways its impossibly clichéd with insane cackling bad guys that appear to have been created by crossing the Borg with assorted crustaceans and good guys that are positively saintly if somewhat odd; Shiro Hagen for example only ever takes his helmet off when he puts on a space suit, he even sleeps in the damned thing and John Lee is morbidly obese, clearly Star Fleet not bothered by the physical fitness of its graduates. Yet despite this it was almost addictive and I just couldnt wait for my weekly fix, possibly a precursor to my later Animé affliction. Its competently executed Space Opera with puppets and reasonable pre CGI special effects, it stands up well in comparison with Gerry Anderson's offerings with plenty of space battles and a somewhat fantasy / religious element at the climax. So after many years and much exposure to more complex adult themed programs was I disappointed by my belated return to adolescence? Fortunately not, daft it may be but it remains ridiculously entertaining. On the down side it really could have done with remastering, the image quality is a little fuzzy and Brian May's music has dated somewhat, it also has somewhat limited features with only the English soundtrack and no subtitles. PS I know we're supposed to fancy the somewhat insipid heroine Lamia but Commander Makara always did it for me, sad or what.
