Heading towards the Bottom?
After a very serious first season, and a slightly more fantasty orientated (colour) second season, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea's third series is a mixed bag. Whilst enjoyable at a disposable level the series sails firmly into the realms of high adventure and camp villains. Made at the same time as the Time Tunnel and Season two of Lost In Space, the themes prevalent in Irwin Allen shows - characterised by brightly coloured paper thin plots - are all here. The costume cupboard is raided and the same creature will apear in all three shows - maybe differently coloured - with the regularity that would not be seen today. Villains range from miniature clowns to aliens to deep sea creatures to wax replicas of the crew whose motivation or reasoning is never discussed! Overall this is TV from a less sophisticated time; but the elements of pure adventure, naive characters and some very good (and not so good) visual FX make this a worthwhile addition to your collection. They don't make 'em like this any more...and probably just as well!
