Between them and the cargo ships stood countless allied escort vessels ready to fight to the death. These wars at sea were being fought throughout the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean. In the Pacific, however, they played only a subordinate role. Aircraft carriers, used as combat units, dominated the war here.
