The quiet American is set in the early 1950's in Vietnam during the end of the first Indochina war. It tells the story of a young American idealist Alden Pyle (Audie Murphy) who comes to Saigon and meets British journalist Thomas Fowler (Michael Regrave) and becomes involved with the 'Third Force' to bring an end to the war between the French and Communist forces.
