Red Desert tells the story of Giuliana (Monica Vitta), a young married woman suffering a mental and emotional crisis and embarking tentatively on an affair. Vitti - Antonioni's lover and muse, and the star of his earlier films L'avventura, L'eclisse and La notte - gives a magnificent, startling performance. Richard Harris also stars as the restless young man who finds himself drawn to her.
Italy's industrial landscape is rendered both beautiful and apocalyptic in Antonioni's hands. Red Desert was a deserved winner of the Golden Lion at the 1964 Venic Film Festival and a high point in modern cinema.

Red Desert
Antonioni's first colour feature features a terrific performance from Monica Vitti, as a married woman embarking on an affair while on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Any aspiring actress would do well to watch Vitti's turn, as she runs through just about every emotion in an attempt to cope with the modern world. Antonioni buffs will surely savour every moment of this BFI Blu-ray release which, thankfully, retains all the grain and is rich in detail. There's also an excellent commentary track to enjoy from Italian film scholar David Forgacs. A groundbreaking film, which haunts the memory for days after.
