The Alamo
John Wayne produces, directs and stars in this larger than life chronicle of one of the most remarkable events in American History. At the Alamo - a crumbling adobe mission - 185 exceptional men joined together in a sacred pact: they would stand firm against an army of 7,000 and willingly give their lives for freedom. Filmed entirely in Texas, only a few miles from the site of the actual battle, The Alamo is a visually stunning and historically accurate celebration of courage and honour. Co-starring Richard Widmark, Laurence Harvey and Chill Wills, and garnering seven Oscar nominations (1960: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best cinematography, Best Sound (winner), Best Editing, Best Score and Best Song) it is a truly memorable movie spectacle.
The Horse Soldiers
John Wayne teams with William Holden and eminent western director John Ford for this frontier actioner packed with laughter, romance and thrills. Written by John Lee Mahin and Martin Rackin, this faithful representation of one of the most daring exploits in history is both a moving tribute to the men who fought and died in that bloody war, and a powerful, action-packed drama. Based on an actual Civil War incident, The Horse Soldiers tells the rousing tale of a troop of Union soldiers who force their way deep into Southern territory to destroy a rebel stronghold at Newton Station. In command is hardbitten Colonel Marlowe (Wayne), a man who is strikingly contrasted by the company's gentle surgeon (Holden) and the beautiful but crafty Southern belle (Constance Towers) who's forced to accompany the Union raiders on perhaps the most harrowing mission in the war.
Cast a Giant Shadow
Part fact, part fiction, Cast a Giant Shadow powerfully dramatizes Israel's heroic 1947-48 struggle for independence. Both realistic war story and passionate romance, it features an all-star cast including Kirk Douglas, Senta Berger and Angie Dickinson, as well as Yul Brynner, John Wayne and Frank Sinatra in notable supporting roles. After a brilliant career with the U.S. army, WWII hero and Jewish American Mickey Marcus (Douglas) is called to the new state of Israel to build an army capable of withstanding its Arab foes. Against the wishes of his wife (Dickinson), Mickey makes the journey and begins transforming a ragtag underground army into a first-class fighting machine. But as the threat of war looms, Mickey must also confront his growling attraction to beautiful activist Magda Simon (Berger).
Brannigan
John Wayne fans will not be disappointed with this action-packed drama that teams him with Oscar winner (1982: Director, Gandhi) Richard Attenborough. Highlighted by unbelievably clever dialogue, the most imaginative action sequences ever to be staged against the London landscape and Wayne's magnetic screen presence, this film, like the Duke himself, is unbeatable! Wayne plays Brannigan, a tough Chicago cop who travels to London to hunt down an escaped gangster. When British officials lose track of the racketeer, Brannigan takes charge and shows stodgy Scotland Yard how things are done the good old American way. But Brannigan's also being tailed by a hit man... and must bulldoze his way through danger to face his enemies in not one, but two deadly showdowns! From a death leap across the Tower Bridge to a brawl in a Victorian Pub, Brannigan delivers!
