The mission is clear. Get in. Get the general. Get out. Commandos charged with freeing a U.S. general from an Alpine fortress should also be told to trust nothing - including the search-and-rescue orders just issued.

You can always spot the holidaying Brit in a cable car by the tune that you hear drummed out on the walls, thanks to Ron Goodwin's unforgettable score for this iconic film. Set in the Alps, Alistair MacLean's Where Eagles Dare follows tough Major Smith (Richard Burton) as he leads an undercover MI6 mission into the headquarters of the German Secret Service in Bavaria to rescue an American prisoner, before he spills his damaging secret. Smith is supported by Clint Eastwood's Lt. Schaffer of the American Ranger Division, plus a mixed team of specialists. In this twisted plot, Schaffer only discovers his true role in the mission once inside the Schloss Adler, the lofty castle where Smith plays German against German in a game of bluff and double bluff. With the truly impressive scenery of the Alps and filled with inventive pyrotechnics, Where Eagles Dare ventures into a dangerous game of deceit where no-one can be trusted. This two-and-a-half hour film flies by thanks to MacLean's dramatic screenplay that builds the tension throughout, entertains and lets the viewer simply sit back and enjoy the ride to and from the castle of the eagles.
