Description

For the first time in HD, Nintendo's Mario Kart franchise comes to the Wii U console, introducing new racing circuit designs and anti-gravity karts that will have players driving upside down. Players will also enjoy a variety of series-favourite features, including the return of 12-player online competitive play, hang-gliders, underwater racing, and motorbikes.

The anti-gravity feature allows for never-imagined racing circuit designs. Players will speed through courses and find themselves suddenly racing on walls in a haunted mansion or upside-down over Princess Peach's Castle as their wheels automatically rotate and shift into anti-gravity gear.

Mario Kart TV lets players share highlight videos they submitted to Miiverse. Crisp HD graphics and a 60-frames-per-second frame rate offer players the most visually stunning entry in the series yet.

Experience a wealth of features that span the series, including 12-player online competitive play. Elements first introduced in Mario Kart 7, such as hang gliders and underwater racing, along with elements introduced in Mario Kart Wii, such as motorbikes and performing tricks in midair, also make their return.

Fan-favourites Waluigi and Toadette re-join the cast of familiar characters from the Mushroom Kingdom, including returning characters such as Metal Mario, Lakitu, and Shy Guy.

This time around, take to the starting grid with Bowser's minions, with all available as playable characters for the first time ever. Will Iggy, Larry, Ludwig, Morton, Roy, and Wendy pip Mario and co to the podium?

Features:

  • Spin Turbo - While racing upside down or on walls, players can bump into other racers or certain course obstacles to get a speed boost. Spin Turbo fundamentally redefines the way that players compete, and makes anti-gravity racing even more exhilarating.
  • New items - Two new items join the fray in Mario Kart 8. First, the Piranha Plant attaches to the front of the player's kart and chomps at other characters, banana peels on the course, and even shells thrown by other characters. Each time the Piranha Plant lunges forward to bite, the player receives a brief boost of speed. The second new item is the Boomerang Flower. After acquiring it, racers can throw a boomerang at opponents to stun them, and its arc allows players to strike multiple opponents with a single toss. The boomerang can be thrown three times, forward or backwards.
  • New courses - Remixed classic courses make a return in Mario Kart 8, with favourites such as Moo Moo Meadows from Mario Kart Wii, Toad's Turnpike from Mario Kart 64, and Donut Plains from Super Mario Kart, among others. The graphics and layout of these courses have been redesigned and reimagined – for example, Toad's Turnpike now allows players to drive up certain walls in anti-gravity mode. The game will include 16 new courses and 16 remixed classic courses.
  • Live recorded music - For the first time in the Mario Kart series, select courses in Mario Kart 8 feature music recorded by live performers.
  • Control scheme - Mario Kart 8 supports a variety of control schemes including the Wii U GamePad, the Wii U Pro Controller, the Wii Wheel, and Wii Remote and Nunchuk. The game can also be played in off-TV mode using just the Wii U GamePad.

Great Family Fun

Another excellent mario kart game. The single player is fun and challenging but like all mario kart games the true fun is in the multiplayer. Nothing causes as much family competitiveness as Mario Kart. The new features keep it fresh and it is finally in the high definition quility that we have always dreamed of. Must buy for any wi u owner.

Mario Kart Gr-8!

A brilliant entry to the Mario Kart series! New ideas keep things fresh while building on tried and tested formula that just keeps on working. Even better now there's a way to stop blue shells :D

Nintendo at their best

This is neither the most feature-rich (Double Dash), nor the most fun entry in the beloved series (lost to MK64, though coming close; probably due to nostalgia only) , but it definitely provides the most polished racing experience of all. If you can live without a proper "battle" mode, this one's for you.

Brilliant

One of the best games I have played. The graphics are some of the best I have ever seen in a game and playing online with no lag at all and a seamless search server is amazing. My only complaints would be that battle mode is no longer as good a minor issue and I do not often play it and the second is that the character roster is not too good.

"Must have" game

Just amazing! It reminds me of Mario Kart 64 but with a whole bunch of new features, characters, vehicles, stages and, of course, fun. Definitely a 5 star game!

Great fun but not the best Mario Kart to date.

This Mario Kart 8 game is definitely gorgeous when played in HD, as well at its gameplay is near-flawless like always but then comes the problems such as Battle Mode is just normal racing tracks and that this in comparison to Double Dash doesn't feel as innovative as DD did. Disregarding that, it's still a highly addictive game to play and especially online! I bought this from Zavvi and I'm very happy with the purchase as well as the price of it!

Mario's Mustache in HD

If you love Mario Kart, then of course you'll love this game. The zero gravity is a funky feature and customisable karts keep things interesting. The weapon line up doesn't seem as good, though: when you're in 1st place you get little else other than coins. Regardless, this is a beautiful game.

Mario karting Ace

Once again Mario and the team are behind the wheel and ready to race. The tracks are full of fun and after a few races soon mastered. Not easy to win though, especially when you get to the 'mirrored'stage! You can play using any type of controller, so if you prefer the wheel then dig it out, but you can also use other controllers or just the wiiU pad. Fun to play alone but once you get bored of that grab some friends because then some fun can begin. It's hard to put down, sometimes easy, often 'oh no!' moments as you try and win each race. If you have enjoyed any Mario racing games before then you will love this one, if it's your first one, then your in for a ride of your life. Happy karting!

Amazing game!

This game is perhaps the best game in the Mario Kart franchise! It offers new experiences for both returning players and new players of the franchise. I highly recommend this game.... and also, there's a way to avoid blue shells now :P

brilliantly addictive

This game is fantastic. it has the best graphics of any mariokart and the tracks feel long and replayable. The unlocks for vehicles are a great new twist and are brilliant for making bizarre and funny combinations. I would reccomend this game to anyone.

Mario Kart 8 mixes up the traditional forumla but still comes out on top.

To say Mario Kart 8 is the penultimate kart racer of this generation is an understatement. Mario Kart 8 mixes vibrant, colorful graphics with tight controls and a beautifully orchestrated soundtrack to bring you a racing experience that cannot be topped. The main goal of this title is obviously to best your rivals at a fast paced race, but along the way you'll encounter imaginative items, beautiful courses and a great set of recognizable Mario characters. With added bonuses such as "Mario Kart TV", which lets you edit and share your races onto the MiiVerse community and YouTube, boredom will not strike easily. The rule book has been thrown out the window in this edition as the new "anti-gravity" mechanic reinvents the genre as bumping into fellow racers is now encouraged and is rewarded with a boost, as well as traversing the underside of the course and wherever you see fit. Along with underwater and flying sections which return from Mario Kart 7, this game truly is a re-imagining of the traditional Mario Kart formula. I give this game five stars- To not pick up this game along with a Wii U would be an error on your part, it's the reason to buy a Wii U and what Wii U owners have long been waiting for. Well done, Nintendo. -Rosstifer.

Mario Kart 8 is amazing!

The new Mario Kart 8 for Wii U is absolutely breath-taking! The stunning HD graphics that the Wii U can provide really make this Mario Kart stand out from the rest. It also creates a family friendly vibe for the people playing the game making it easy to include friends and other family members in the action-packed racing fun! The new game mechanic, "Anti-Gravity", is very innovative for a racing game. This feature allows for driving on the walls of the track, while maintaining the tense and exciting Mario Kart feeling.
