House: The Collection Review

House - The image is decent, not mind blowing, nor should it be since it is an older film shot relatively soft. The audio is excellent. It was recorded well on location so the dialog is clear and the interim ambient noise is zilch. Supplements include ported over Anchor Bay commentary and a new 1 h 06 min retrospective making of as the highlight of the disc. Some interesting bits if not completely inspiring. House II - Better image rendering. Decent audio. Nice supplements. Same ported over commentary and a new retrospective making of doc that clocks at about 57 mins. Not bad. Fun little movie just like the first entry, House III - Average movie has moments. Nice image. OK audio. Strong supplements include new making of and excellent vintage behind the scenes that are worth the price of inclusion. House IV - Surprisingly interesting final chapter of the House saga is mixed up tonally, but still interesting as a B film. Image is super soft but still very much watchable and improved from VHS/DVD. Sound is atrocious. Someone messed up badly. Not sure when as I did not compare older formats but the sound and music all the way through is distorted and blown out. And not just a little bit, it sounds like someone tried taping a radio song on a cheap Recoton cassette tape and had the input volume into the red flattened and constant. A huge huge error. Extras are pretty decent. The booklet - The House Companion is a super sturdy hard back 90 pg item of interest for serious collectors. It is very well done and a nice addition the the set. Packaging - Very nice box packaging. All discs have reversible original and newly interpreted artwork. Definitely worth it for fans of the franchise. NOTE: some minor framing issues on pt 1 but it did not distract me in any way, whatsoever. The framing actually only looks noticeable on the still screen shots from the caps-a-holic website. In motion, House looks just fine, which seems like something like that shouldn't make sense since usually in motion refers to compression or other digital artifacting, but for whatever reason, I was never taken out of the film while watching so...if you don;t go in with your guns loaded, you'll have a good time.
