Made when Jaws was still the most successful film of all time, The Car has almost exactly the same premise, but replaces the ocean with the Utah desert, and the shark with a Lincoln Continental Mark III of possibly supernatural origin.
When two teenage cyclists and a hitch-hiking musician are killed in apparently deliberate hit-and-runs, the police department of Santa Ynez investigates, whereupon the seemingly driverless vehicle turns on its hapless officers as well. And when the car strikes rather too close to the home of Captain Wade Parent (James Brolin), he vows to stop at nothing to defeat it.
Director Elliot Silverstein (Cat Ballou, A Man Called Horse) keeps everything as slick and streamlined as the car itself, turning the desert landscape into a powerfully mythic backdrop for a potent clash between the forces of good and those of inexplicable but clearly implacable evil.
Special Features:
- High Definition presentation (1080p), on Blu-ray for the first time in the world!
- Original uncompressed Stereo PCM audio
- Optional English SDH subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
- Audio commentary with director Elliot Silverstein moderated by Calum Waddell
- Making a Mechanical Monster: Special Effects Artist William Alridge Remembers The Car
- Hitchhike the Hell: Actor John Rubinstein recalls becoming a victim of The Car

Jaws in the desert
A reminiscent of Spielberg’s “Duel” and the unbeatable “Jaws”, this film does well in creating the needed atmosphere and is quite able in making believable the absurdity of a driverless killer car in a small American town. Of course, this should bring me to Carpenter’s “Christine”, but this is a completely different kind of film. To sum up, a well achieved effort on the difficult Horror genre. Great quality on the Blu-ray. An edition to keep!

Jaws?
This is a really fun movie and an interesting (if odd) concept. Definitely one that I had not heard of before, but certainly glad I found it! Usual polished package from Arrow, with great special features.

Not what you expect. Very Good.
When I 1st saw this film many years ago. I was blown away how creepy having a car going about with a supernatural feel about it. This is old fashioned by today's standards. This film is a good horror film and still stands up today.

"Keep the road blocks up, get all the other guys. Get 'em down at the station right away."
I recall seeing this movie in my younger years and felt it compared very well to the Spielberg movie "Duel". The bluray version of this film a a big step-up in quality over the old dvd release and is one of those classic movies of the 70's. Highly recommended!
