Jack Hawkins, Donald Sniden, Denholm Elliott and Virginia McKenna star in a powerful and moving documentary style account of life on board a British warship during World War II. Directed by Charles Frend, it is the courageous story of the Battle of the Atlantic - a story of an ocean, a ship and a handful of men. The brave crew are the heroes. The heroine is the ship.

As Blu-ray still commands a premium price, many movies just do not justify the extra expense or, indeed, the superior video and audio that this format allows. Given a crisp 35mm film stock source, however, many classic movies can find new life on Blu-ray. Such is the case with "The Cruel Sea". The picture quality on this disk is superb and, although only mono, the sound is crystal clear, too. There are not many extras but the included interview with Sir Donald Sinden is a treat. Thoroughly good viewing and highly recommended.
