Not Your Average Superhero

Blade, also known as Eric Brooks, is a human-vampire hybrid (dhampir) who has honed his supernatural abilities to become a feared and highly successful vampire hunter in the Marvel universe.

He was created for comic books in 1973 by writer Marvel Wolfman and penciller Gene Colan. Taking on the role of a supporting character, his first recorded appearance was marked in The Tomb Of Dracula #10. However, he would eventually make the transition to the starring role for his own series of comics.

Since his debut, Blade has become popular amongst Marvel fans, being adapted for television, film, and video games. The character is most known for his portrayal in the ‘90s/2000s film series, which starred Wesley Snipes as the eponymous hero. Snipes was subsequently succeeded by Mahershala Ali in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Released in 1998, the first Blade film (directed by Stephen Norrington and written by David S. Goyer) brought the vampire hunter to the big screen for the first time. Unlike its contemporary superhero films, Blade introduced elements of horror and targeted an older demographic of movie-goers with its bloody violence and colourful language.

The film was considered a huge success, garnering a loyal cult following. As such, it was followed shortly thereafter by its two sequels: Blade II (2002) and Blade: Trinity (2004).
