The First Avenger

For some reason, people seem to overlook Captain America when they think of the "Wave 1" Marvel films that came out before The Avengers - and that is a shame because this is a great origin movie. The use of CG to make Chris Evans look like the 90-pound pre-super-serum Steve Rogers isn't always great, but for the rest of the time you barely notice, which does allow you to build a great deal of sympathy for the character & understand why he behaves the way he does. When he does finally get the break (and the body) he wants, you can feel his frustration as he is sidelined as a propaganda tool in travelling shows. The jump from his first unofficial mission on the front lines to his last one in WWII is glossed over with a montage, which does give you a feel for how he becomes the seasoned soldier without adding unnecessary dialogue or scenes. This method does give room to explore this period in his life a bit more in other films, which seems to be something they will be doing in the upcoming sequel "The Winter Soldier". All in all, the action is good, the storyline makes sense (with the obligatory stretch of the imagination that super hero films require), and the villain stands up as a credible threat mentally & physically, although is clearly kept on the cards for a future storyline.

Old skool superhero movie

Captain America: The First Avenger 3D is a solid superhero origin movie. Interesting to me was that my 7-year-old was engaged throughout the 2 hours - an impressive statistic, in my experience. We watched this Blu-ray in 3D, but I have to say I was unconvinced about the real value-add here. There are other 3D movie experiences that have definitely bettered this one. But audio/visuals are clear and bright, and the 5.1 system got a decent enough workout. Overall: 4 out of 5.

The First Avenger

A fantastic story line with brilliant special effects. It is well acted and truly riveting watch. The 3D version of the film is spectacular, the depth and the colour is second to none. The bonus features are very good and it is worth the price of these documentaries alone, the extra "Something funny happened on the way to Thor's hammer" is a nice touch tying this moving into the Avengers theme that runs through the Marvel franchise.

Captain Fantastic!

What a film! I went to see Captain America at the cinema and it was quite literally amazing, combining the story, the acting, and the CGI it's near perfect! Chris Evans performance as the super strengthed Captain America is brilliant after sub par performances in 'Whats Your Number' and 'Fanastic Four' he proves his truly great acting talent without breaking a sweat. Joe Johnston who directed kids classic Jumanji has created a memorable Super-hero movie up there with Batman The Dark Knight and Superman 2! For me it's a must see and has hyped me up for the fact that The Avengers release next year. Top, top film!
