The Royal Kingdom series looks at the unique relationship between the monarchy and the country, from local tales to events of state, the history, pageantry and the magnificent architecture.
Since the days when kings first started building palaces along the banks of the river, they've used the Thames as a means of transport. In Henry VIII's day, the king has no less the 13 royal residences in the capital and nine of them could be reached by water. That made the Royal Watermen extremely important as they ferried the monarch in style from Greenwich in the East right through to Windsor in the West.
In this programme we travel much of that route visiting the Palace in Eltham, the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, the Tower of London and the Royal Hospital in Chelsea.
