A Very Good Last Hurrah

It was a pity SGA had to come to an end so soon, especially seeing as it was really just to make way for Universe. This last season showed, the show still had plenty of life left in it. With Amanda Tapping leaving to work on her own show (Sanctuary), Robert Picardo (of Star Trek fame) joins the cast. Given his character's previous relationship with Atlantis and its team, this was always going to be a tough sell. However, the writers proved they were up to the challenge and made a believable arc for his character. Picardo really added to the show, with many great little moments. As much as I loved both Amanda and Torri, their characters always seemed to be left in the background, it was good to the a commander character who was given a respectful amount of screen time and good characterization. Another big plus this season was the SFX. In previous years it could be quite hit-and-miss but season 5's was very impressive for Stargate. While there was no really overarching story-arc, the episodes were still quite good overall. There were some that didn't really work. Like 'Ghost in the Machine', which, even if Torri hadn't backed, would have felt like a bit of a weird episode and served only to hammer home that Weir's character was pointlessly removed from the show. Then there was the final episode. Obviously, as the last ever episode, no matter what happened it would never have felt like enough. Yet, this seemed particularly poor. The story felt a bit silly and many of the plot device were just too 'deus ex machina', even for Stargate. The ending however was very interesting and left the door open for a very interesting movie which looks to never be made. It is a pity there will never be a sixth season as there were some interesting plot lines introduced. Namely the mid-season two-parter which was a very interesting twist and it's a shame it won't be developed further. All in all, a very good final season, with the usual array of interesting and often quite funny extras, to one of the most underrated spin-offs in recent years.
