The World at War: The Ultimate Restored Edition is the definitive version of one of the greatest documentary series ever made. Each frame has been painstakingly restored and the audio enhanced and upgraded so that this is the best this award-winning series has ever looked and sounded.
Narrated by Laurence Olivier and first broadcast in 1973 when memories of the Second World War were still clear in people's minds and the war's veterans numerous, over 26 episodes this unique series assembled these recollections, together with archive footage, to create one of the most powerful and successful historical documentaries ever seen. The voices of those that fought, worked or watched during the war gave each episode a vivid sense of what it was like to be there and was the hallmark of the series.

I have seen this a couple of times now and still despair of mans inhumanity to man and the incompetence of people in charge of the destiny of hundreds of thousands of soldiers, airmen & navy personnel. This series should be shown in schools of all religion and colour as a warning that this is still happening in countries in the name of religion, race and territory. To the people who still deny the holocaust, watch this series and then decide. This is the definitive collection of films and documentaries for the second world war.
I have viewed the entire series here in the States and was very surprised by the quality of your offering. It seems like a brand new series. Your service and delivery processes should be commended. Maybe you should appear on Facebook and Twitter on a larger scale to call attention to your operation. Your service and price is truly first-rate!
Having recently visited Berlin, I decided it was time to learn about the events that changed the face of Europe and try and understand the reasons behind the events of World War 2 and especially learn about the people who were involved in the horror and the heroics. The World At War: The Ultimate Restored Edition is by far the best historical collection I have seen. I would recommend this set if you have an interest in history.
I always liked the World at War when initially shown on the TV, but as I worked away from home, and still do, I have never seen all the episodes. I am now enjoying a show which is brilliantly narrated and well produced as and when it suits me. The World At War: The Ultimate Restored Edition is money well spent.
This DVD version of The World at War has the tag line :- The Ultimate Restored Edition is the definitive version of one of the greatest documentary series ever...I can't comment any extra on that as it really does say it all. Absolutely top marks to the restoration team, Freemantle Media Enterprises. Some of the restored black and white footage looked as though it had been filmed yesterday. The sound is top quality too; nothing I can think detracts from it. Yes, it is about a war that finished nearly seventy years ago, and there have been hundreds of films, documentaries and bio's of the people involved, but I still learnt something I didn't know in every section. Even in my life-time, the perception of World War 2 has changed dramatically. In my youth, it was simply the war Britain won over the German's. Then it was the war we won with a little bit of help from the U.S.A. Later still, it seemed apparent that the war was really between Germany and Russia; the western front being a mere side-line. More recently, any mention of World War 2 has had to include The Holocaust as though that was what it was all about really. What this box set does is bring home the big picture to World War 2, giving validity to all these views but showing that there was a lot more going on at the same time. All-in-all it's easy to watch, but in an absorbing way. I would recommend it to both young and old.
The World at War: The Ultimate Restored Edition is an amazing collection of archive material. This restored edition is a work of art, the time and hard work taken to deliver this item in this format is a great achievement. Everyone with the slightest interest in this period of history should view this item. This box set is like having picture reference books. This is just not a DVD box set, it is part of our history, which we should never forget.
The World At War: The Ultimate Restored Edition; does it seem better than when I watched it on TV? Yes, but that's probably down to upscaling. Most of the footage is from the '30s and '40s, so you can't really make it much better. Even the interviews of survivors are from the early '70s and the quality isn't up to much. It's not about the quality though. The content is beyond comparison, nothing that has come since is as good on the broad subject of WW2.
Great series, saw it on tv years ago. Concerned that sendit advertise very cheaply, I renew account, send payment, they confirm despatch. Only when I queried delivery do they tell me it's out of stock and I will get a refund! Was pricing a ploy to keep customers and what would have happened if I did not query delivery ? Very disappointed customer !
The World At War: The Ultimate Restored Edition is a tremendous account of the horrors and reality of the Second World War. It's a fantastic archive of film and the narration from Olivier is exceptional. It's worth every penny. I would recommend it to those who, like myself, may have a limited knowledge of the true story of the war. This series is a real eye opener of the many defeats that the allies suffered, as well as the victories.
The restoration has worked well making the picture sharper and widescreen with the benefit of 5.1 sound. The packaging is attractive, and my only reservation is that the booklet that tells you the titles of the episodes on each disc is a bit light on content / insubstantial. Should be bought in quantity as Xmas presents for old and young alike.
I was a bit apprehensive about this d.v.d as I had read so many bad reviews saying it was not as good as the original. I ordered it and I am very pleased with the quality of the picture and the sound. I have wanted this series for a long time as it tells the true story of the wars and it will be helpful for my son who is doing History at University. I have only watched one of the disks at the moment but I shall be watching the rest in time.
