Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spyfinds George Smiley (Gary Oldman), a recently retired MI6 agent, doing his best to adjust to a life outside the secret service. However, when a disgraced agent reappears with information concerning a mole at the heart of the service, Smiley is drawn back into the murky field of espionage. Tasked with investigating which of his trusted former colleagues has chosen to betray him and their country, Smiley narrows his search to four suspects - all experienced, skilled and successful agents - but past histories, rivalries and friendships make it far from easy to pinpoint the man who is eating away at the heart of the British establishment.
An acting masterclass from the crème de la crème of British film (Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch) and inspired direction from Let The Right One In’s Tomas Alfredson make this gripping and tense adaptation of John le Carré’s classic spy novel essential viewing.

Excellent
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is excellent.

BBC version was better
This version is a bit disappointing, though having some good moments, one being the MI6 Christmas party - did they really have one? The BBC version I found more consistently dark, menacing and suitable drab. We also got a few clues as to the Spy's motives, which were almost entirely lacking from this version, probaby because in the BBC version we have the meeting between Smiley and the Spy) not to spoil the ending for those who havent seen it). The Spy makes clear that he hates the USA and its dominance over the UK in many areas of life. One can only assume that this would not go down well in Holywood, although it should come as no surprise that a Soviet agent was not a great fan of the US. Odd. However, without the confession and attempt at self-justification, the scene falls rather flat. Gary Oldman plays it very downbeat. In fact he hardly ever says anything at all and looks grim. Not his best a fillm.
