The Face Behind The Cowl

In DC Comics, the first iteration of Batgirl was Betty Kane, a character who was created by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff in 1961. However, she was replaced by Barbara Gordon in Detective Comics #359 (1967), and this new rendition of the superhero became synonymous with the moniker.

The daughter of police commissioner James Gordon, Barbara donned the cape and cowl after being inspired by the work of Batman (Bruce Wayne) and Robin (Dick Grayson). At the beginning, the World’s Greatest Detective was hesitant to endorse her vigilante career, but he later warmed to the idea after seeing her potential. Unfortunately, Barbara’s crime-fighting escapades were curtailed when the infamous villain Joker shot and paralysed her, an event that confined the vigilante to a wheelchair. Unwilling to remain helpless, she adopted a new identity: Oracle, a hero behind the scenes.

Barbara having been forced to abandon her animal-themed guise, the role of Batgirl was adopted by a number of different characters: Helena Bertinelli, Cassandra Cain, and Stephanie Brown. Being the daughter of two legendary assassins (David Cain and Lady Shiva), Cassandra was a natural fit for the role because of her already well-refined combat skills. Unlike Helena, who took the superhero identity without approval, she received permission to assume the vacant position from both Barbara and Batman. Likewise, Stephanie — the daughter of a criminal called the Cluemaster — succeeded Cassandra with her blessing.
