Created by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, Luca (2021) tells the story of a young sea monster who possesses the ability to take on the appearance of a human while on dry land. The eponymous character, Luca Paguro (Jacob Tremblay), spends most of his days herding goatfish near the coast of Portorossso, an Italian city. Despite his parents fearing the consequences should Luca venture too close to the surface, he is encouraged to do so by fellow sea monster Alberto Scorfano (Jack Dylan Grazer), who has been living alone above the waterline due to the absence of his father.

Luca discovers that his appearance changes to that of a human when not doused or submerged in water, allowing him to blend in with the surface dwellers. The two boys quickly bond over their mutual interest in a Vespa, a type of Italian scooter. However, their above-sea escapes don’t last long, as Luca’s parents find out about their son’s disobedience and send him to live with his uncle Ugo (Sacha Baron Cohen) in the deep sea. Refusing to stay, Luca runs away to Portorosso with Alberto in search of a true Vespa so that they can travel the world. So begins their summer adventure.
