The Master Thief

Created by George Kay and Francois Uzan, Lupin is a French mystery TV series that follows Assane Diop (played by actor Omar Sy). The show debuted on Netflix in early 2021 with its first five episodes before the remaining five were released later in the year. It quickly became the most watched non-English series ever released on the streaming platform.

Assane is the son of an immigrant who hailed from Senegal. During his early youth, Assane was brought to France by his father so that he could have a better life. However, his father was framed for the theft of a diamond necklace by his employer, Hubert Pellegrini. While locked away in prison, he hung himself due to being unable to cope with the shame.

Twenty-five years later, Assane finds himself inspired by a book his father had given him on his birthday. This book features the character Arsene Lupin, a gentleman thief created by Maurice Leblance in the early 1900s. Calling upon his many skills — including thievery, subterfuge, and disguise — Arsene goes on a mission to expose Hubert’s crimes.
