A New Zombie Blockbuster
Director Ruben Fleischer made his theatrical debut with 2009’s Zombieland, a film starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin.
Written by Rhet Reese and Paul Wernick, the film introduces audiences to a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by flesh-eating zombies. The cast play a group of roaming survivors who band together on a road trip spanning the Southwestern United States, attempting to find somewhere safe from the zombie horde.
The film is regarded as one of the best zombie films of all time, surpassing Dawn of the Dead’s 2004 box office and warranting a sequel, Zombieland: Double Tap, which released in 2019.
Welcome To Zombieland
Zombieland begins two months following the dawn of the zombie uprising, which began as a strain of mad cow disease. We first encounter college student Columbus (Eisenberg) as he ventures cross-country from Texas to Ohio, seeking to find out if his parents have survived.
Along the way, Columbus meets another survivor by the name of Tallahassee (Harrelson). The pair join together, where they eventually encounter Wichita (Stone) and Little Rock (Breslin). These two con artists steel Tallahassee and Columbus’ weapons and SUV.
After tracking them down, Colombus convinces everyone to settle on a truce. Now a group of four, they set off to California in search of the Pacific Playland amusement park – which is supposedly free of zombies. This takes them to Hollywood, where Columbus bonds with Wichita.
However, the two sisters flee to Pacific Playland alone, with Wichita fearing any emotional connection. While at the amusement park, they draw the surrounding of zombies to their location by accident.
Having followed them to the park, Columbus and Tallahassee help them fend off the horde. Once safe, Wichita opens up to Columbus about her real name, Krista. And the group leave, now an unlikely family.
