Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is a next-generation, third-person action game set in Middle-earth that explores an original story of vengeance and redemption.
In Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, gamers take on the role of Talion, a valiant ranger whose family is slain in front of him the night Sauron and his army return to Mordor, moments before his own life is taken. Resurrected by a Spirit of vengeance and empowered with Wraith abilities, Talion ventures into Mordor and vows to destroy those who have wronged him. Through the course of his personal vendetta, Talion uncovers the truth of the Spirit that compels him, learns the origins of the Rings of Power and ultimately confronts his true nemesis.
Every enemy that players face is a unique individual, differentiated by their personality, strengths and weaknesses. Through the Nemesis System, enemy relationships and characteristics are shaped by player actions and decisions to create personal archenemies that remember and adapt to the player and are distinct to every gameplay session. Gamers are able to craft their own battles, enemies and rewards within the dynamic world that remembers and adapts to their choices, delivering a unique experience to every player.
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is under development by Monolith Productions. The team has collaborated with Middle-earth Enterprises, Peter Jackson and the artists at Weta Workshop to ensure that the settings, characters and story align authentically within canon.

Best Hack'n'Slash
This game borrows heavily from the Assassin's Creed series but has less pointless collectibles. Besides the main missions their are lots of good side missions like rescuing slaves, or challenges involving one of your three main weapons; bow, dagger, or sword. Of course the bigger draw is the "Nemesis System" where certain captain orcs are given random, but distinct personalities. Your interactions with them and amongst themselves makes for fantastic emergent gameplay as you seek revenge on orc who earned a promotion of killing you, or you decide to let Bubol the Cave-Rat live each time you have an encounter just to see how scarred one orc can get. The combat is similar to the Batman Arkham series of games, fast flowing yet simply executed. The only criticism I have of the game is that it takes a few hours to level up and actually feel like you're succeeding at the game. Early encounters with large groups of orcs and their captains can feel overwhelming, frustrating and pointless. However, by early-mid to late game you will have developed some useful and entertaining abilities. By late game the combat options are phenomenal. So a fairly long learning curve but worth it in the end. The game is fairly grisly, more so than any of the Lord of the Ring films, so I wouldn't recommend young children playing it. Also if you don't care at all for the Lord of the Rings series, this is still an extremely enjoyable game to play.

Shadow of what could have been
Fun game although not as advertised. This isn't zavvi's fault it's just they changed a lot of it from what was shown a year ago and so it's pretty disappointing if you have seen the videos they posted about the nemesis system and how you use fear as a weapon. Good game just not the great one I was expecting

Really good so far, really has that middle earth feel to it, the best LOTR game I've played to date, good action and story, definitely worth a look.

AWESOME
Don't normally bother reviewing games, but this one is so exceptional, it deserves it! Think all the best bits of Assassin's Creed + Batman Arkham mash it all together and put it in Mordor and it spells one awesome adventure! Invest now - you won't regret it!!!!

Perfect
This game has is all for someone like me. Although I felt slightly annoyed at the shortness of the main quest it is still sizeable enough and rewarding - I'm just a gamer that loves a very very deep rich long storyline. All the side missions- from branding Orcs, betraying War chiefs through their own followers, to grabbing all the runes you can switching and changing them as you go through the game moulding it to suit your needs, to other things such as doing survivalist, artefacts and various other things for challenges. I like the open world-ness to the game, you don't have to stream drive through the main mission you can just head out and do your own thing which was one reason I liked this. The combat system is well structured, I won't say it's hard but you what you unlock with ability points as you progress are great. If you are a fan of Middle Earth then this is definitely worth a shot. Personal rating of a high 9/10.

Amazing!
Fantastic development on the lord of the rings and Middle Earth franchise. Loved these games on the PS2 / Ps3 and Shadow of Mordor is one step better. If you like assassins creed series then this is a must own - gore, adventure and a good story line to boot. I give it an 8 out of 10.
