Rift Review

Rift is part World of Warcraft, part EverQuest 2 and part Warhammer Online. And with its dynamic world invasions constantly spawning, there’s never a dull moment while you quest, group, raid, PvP and craft your way through the world of Telara. At first glance, RIFT looks like all the other fantasy MMORPGs out there. There are heavy influences from many sources, including WoW, EQ2 and others. Having played these MMOs I can see that the developers have cherry picked the best features from these games for their own. If that’s all they did however, I would be disappointed. Instead, they used those familiar systems as a base to build two great features into Rift that makes it stand apart from the rest: the dynamic invasions and the flexible class system. And that’s what separates this title from the rest. The beauty of this game is that it breaks up the monotony of the standard level and gear grind that is common in most MMOs with the rift invasions. The invasions happen constantly and are great fun to participate in. They scale based on the number of people that are in your group as do the rewards. Plus there is usually a boss mob that requires a full 40 person raid to take down to end the invasion. Choose your level of involvement and the game will reward you appropriately. The other great feature in Rift is the flexible class system. Once you pick your archetype for your character among the warrior, rogue, cleric and mage options you are introduced to the soul system. Souls are essentially skill trees focused on unique roles for each archetype. Warriors can pick the Beastmaster soul, for example, to be a pet class or a Mage can choose the Warlock soul to be a debuffer. Your character can pick three souls to work with out of eight available to each archetype and invest points into each one to get what you want out of them. Trion did a great job of making gameplay fun, immersive and addictive. This title is a great addition to a genre that no one thought would see another great success since WoW. If you are burnt on your current MMO, I would highly recommend RIFT. If you are new to MMOs, this game a great place to start.

Review of Rift: Special Edition (Includes Free 8GB USB Stick)

The best MMO I have ever played.

It's getting there.

Bought this game after being recommended by a friend leaving World of Warcraft and i can see why. At first the game looks like every other MMO but deep down, the longer you play the more you feel like a lot of effort really has been put into developing the game. At the moment they're just not there yet with all the updates to the game engine and various other components but it feels like soon they will crack it so to speak. Well done to the Rift Team!

Rift: Special Edition

Rift brings together some of the best features from other MMORPGs, and injects in, it's own little innovations, and all of it works seamlessly. On top of this, there's constant additions to the content, which ensure an interesting experience. All of the features have been greatly improved since the launch, and a lot of bugs have been crushed. The content added also means you can keep playing, way after maxing out the level of your character. The game looks great overall, but needs quite a beefy rig (good hardware) to run at the maximum settings. There will be a drop in frames-per-second when a lot of rifts are open at one time, but this does not impede the game-play, and can be overlooked. If you are playing with friends, the dungeons will be very interesting, and good fun. Also, for those who play, or want to play with your significant other, there are two player instances available. Rift deserves attention and praise. I highly recommend it.

Good game at a cheap price!

After playing Ever Quest2 for many years me and my other half decided to give Rift a go. We've only reached level 13 on Rift so far but we can already say that Trion are a very well run company and security is... well probably overdone but you know your account is safe at least! The game itself is somewhat of a WoW clone and I really miss the less-cartoony EQ2, however my other half thinks Rift is less cartoony than EQ2 so make of that what you will. The spells and effects look fantastic, they're bright and pretty without being over the top which makes the game a visual pleasure. Everyone in the game seems very friendly and so far we've not met any whiney 12yr olds which is a huge bonus! In short, I think Rift will be our new mmo home. At least until Guild Wars 2 or, if it ever happens, EQNext. However we just don't know if we want to ever play an SoE game again. Buy Rift, for this comically cheap price and free 8GB usb stick. Why wouldn't you at least try it for the 30 days that are included with the game? (there are even an extra 10 days free in this version on top of that!)

Polishes the current MMO Formula.

If your a coming from WoW or a similar MMO, Then RIFT will be very welcoming to you. The control schemes are mostly the same and the UI is also similar. As you travel the world you may run into some RIFT's. These are gaping holes in the world in which you must destroy. When a Rift randomly opens you are given the option to join a group of near by players to close the RIFT. These are immensely fun and the RIFT's themselves look stunning. I'm not much of a PvP person but I have tried it a few times and from what I've seen it's great. The classes seem balanced and the combat is fast paced and exciting. You would be wise to pick a server with a high population as the other servers are ghost towns. The bottom line is, RIFT is a solid MMO. If you loved WoW, SWTOR or any other similar MMO's you will love this. The game is frequently updated with new content and bug fixes. The game sometimes is a little too similar though. PS: The 8GB USB does what it says on the tin and looks great too!

Rift: Special Edition

So far so good, Ive had the game three days and ive already notched up about 15 hours gameplay. It's a slow start to the game with many easy boost your level missions but it does a quick turn around with rift battles adding alot of fast paced fun. It doesnt really push the boundries into anything extremely new to mmo games but I do love the whole concept of if your nearby join in, it makes for great gameplay when a complete stranger helps you kill the giant troll just before he beats your head in or getting to feel like the champ when you save some noobs from a horde of goblins. Either way I'm having plenty of fun with this game and would recomend it to my friends.

Great MMO for those bored of WoW

played WoW for the past 5 years and I am pretty much done with it, nothing ever changes in the world other than new instances and armor that takes 1000000 hours to get. Eff that noise. I personally have had enough of the WoW formula, so I gave Rift a shot. I must say, it has me hooked. The graphics are great, kinda like Aion's style. Combat is pretty much the same as any MMO, click attack press hotkey to use ability. The quests are your standard quests, kill 5 of this go get this from here, but the major difference in this game, are the Rift segments. Randomly around the world a Rift will open up in the sky and plop down monsters coming to destroy you and everyone around it. Your job is to go to it and kill everything that comes out of it, closing the rift and earning rewards. The BEST thing this game did is make it so that if someone is attacking a monster that you need for a quest, if you attack too, it counts! No more waiting for a respawn only to have it ganked again. You automatically join into a "Rift group" when you enter a rift, no queing or invites, you just go have at it. The Class system is unlike any I've ever seen in an MMO. You start off as either Warrior, mage, cleric, or rogue. Then there are 8 sub classes per class you can choose from after earning their "souls". You can use 3 at a time to make cool combinations to fit your fighting style. There are also a host of abilities in each subclass and talent trees. Like I said, if anyone's sick of WoW and wants something just as good, if not better in some areas, then grab Rift.

Rift - Bargain

The game looks beautiful, plays well and so far have I have no issues will it. The fact that this came bundled with an 8GB pendrive at this fantastic price certainly helped persuade me to buy but all things said the game or the drive are both worth twice the selling price. Great deal Zavvi.
