Omerta

Omerta: City of Gangsters isn't a bad idea for a game. Take turned based combat a la XCOM: Enemy Unknown, apply a coat of 1920's Atlantic City gangster paint to it, toss in a bit of resource management by the company best known on 360 for the Tropico series, and you should be good to go, right? Playing Omerta: CoG can basically be broken into two game play elements. The first is the top view map (think Tropico) of the section of the city that your current mission takes place in. You'll get an objective, such as "Shut down three protection rackets." Once you complete it, there will be another objective or two, then that mission is complete and you go back to the city map to choose a new mission. After (or during) each mission you will increase your gang size and maybe gain some new abilities now and again. The second game play element is the combat encounters. You decide which active gang members are going into combat and sometimes can assign another to a support role. These encounters have the objective to either kill all enemies or go retrieve this item (documents, incarcerated person, etc.) and escape. The top of the screen shows the queue of whose turn is next, including enemies, so you can try to do a little strategic planning. Each gang member has a certain number of movement points and action points. Then can move into cover, they can attack, some have abilities to heal; it's pretty standard-fare turn-based stuff. There are some minor annoyances in combat. Melee attacks can hit through closed windows because they are simply based on line of sight and proximity. Lots of maps have single doorway choke points that just turn into corpse funnels. Starting positions are sometimes jacked up, with some of your gang dropped 2 turns away because they spawned behind a fence or a truck. The hit percentages displayed don't seem accurate. When playing Omerta:CoG, what you will be spending most of your time doing is assigning gang members to tasks and then waiting for them to complete them. More often than not, there is more waiting than assigning. Achievement-wise, nothing is too difficult. Overall, it's not a terrible game. It's not great, either. There's lots of waiting for gang members to complete their current task so you can use a menu to assign another one. If your expectations are tempered accordingly, it is what it is: resource management and middling turn-based action, gangster style.

Very enjoyable game!

Omerta: City of Gangsters is a very enjoyable game, though I can understand that not everyone would like it. If you like turn-based combat games like X-Com, you'll like this game. It isn't perfect but it's definitely a lot of fun!
