Good but slightly janky mystery game

Crimes and Punishments is a big step forward for the series, though it is a way from perfect. It's nice to see the game come to the next generation of consoles, and the graphical improvements are big. There are some performance issues here - occasionally stuttering frame rate, frequent annoying loading times - but nothing that ruins the experience. The cases are largely fascinating, well written and a joy to solve. The game is divided into 6 cases, each with numerous threads and compelling solutions, with an admittedly rather under developed over arcing storyline. They require a good amount of thought to reach the correct conclusion (you can get it entirely wrong this time and the game will still continue) though I felt that the puzzling elements have been over simplified when compared to the last game. Still, I lost many hours wandering the lush but small locales Sherlock must explore in the course of the game, hunting for clues and meeting suspects. You'll meet some familiar faces along the way, though sadly their involvement in the cases is minimal at best. The voice acting is very good on the whole, and character models more expressive than in previous games. Each case will take you anywhere from 3 to 5 hours depending on how thorough you are, making for a robust and lengthy single player only experience. You can really take your time over this game though, so for others it may be even longer; I personally found the relaxed pace a really welcome change from most of todays games. Once you've gone through the game the replay value is questionable, though. Overall, despite it's flaws I wish there were more games like this on the market at the moment! 4 out of 5
