Created by Denis Blanchot (a game designer and journalist), Dobble was inspired by a game by Jacques Cottereau. The French mathematician Cottereau crafted this game with 31 cards, each of which featured six images of insects. Every pair of cards in the ‘game of insects’ shared one image, a concept that Blanchot adapted to form Dobble.

The first iteration of the game was released in France in 2009. This new game incorporated a deck of 55 cards sporting eight symbols, and players needed to identify the shared picture and announce their finding before the other players. In 2011, Blue Orange Games (a US-based company) introduced North America and the UK to this new game, expanding its global audience.

Since its commercial debut, Dobble’s popularity has only grown, and tons of updated editions have hit the market. There are different themes and selling points, such as the inclusion of cartoonish animals or being waterproof, and age-specific variations make it accessible to developing kids. For example, the 123 Edition allows those over the age of three to learn numbers, colours, and shapes.
