Imagine your worst fear a reality with this brand new 4K 40th anniversary restoration of The Howling, approved by Director Joe Dante (Gremlins). With groundbreaking special effects by Rob Bottin (The Thing, The Fog, Total Recall), The Howling has been stunningly restored for a new generation of horror fans. Graphically violent, sexually explicit and nightmarishly intense, it remains one of the most original werewolf movies of the eighties.
After an intense confrontation with a serial killer, news anchor Karen White (Dee Wallace) is left traumatised and suffering from amnesia. In need of recovery, Karen takes refuge within "The Colony", a country retreat organised by her psychiatrist Dr Waggner (Patrick Macnee). But things at "The Colony" aren't as idyllic as they originally seemed and as blood curdling screams break the midnight silence, Karen's memories slowly begin to come into focus.

The transfer to 4k is stunning for this 40 year old immortal horror classic, and approved by the director Joe Dante himself. Released the same year as the excellent An American Werewolf in London, The Howling has the edge in that the film is gritter, seedier, and downright dirtier. The extras are phenomenal too. Also the slipcase is the sturdier kind, not like the flimsy type that holds the recent 4K version of The Thing. All in all an excellent product for a seminal horror.
There can be no doubt that the disc is very light on extras, but the packaging is very nice for a start and the restoration that has been carried out is nothing short of exceptional! One of the best looking UHDs I've ever seen; it's pin sharp with excellent detail and gorgeous colours. Buy it!
I'm not going to say anything about the film its self, I don't need to if you're reading this you know why you're here. The transfer really is fantastic and makes this 40 year old dog look like a young pup again. The packaging and the extras though are on another level.... Commentaries, a full documentary on another disc all about movie monsters, the poster is great and on top quality paper no your usual flimsy rubbish, lobby cards, booklet... The set is a collectors dream and should be in any horror fans collection.
I used to own this on video and seeing it again was a revelation! It's so clear! I was able to see so much extra detail and the transformation scenes are fantastically creepy. It has a grear menu and the extras are good but the reason I don't give it 5 stars is because not only are the previous extras not here, there is also a missing commentary from the US edition. So this is not an ultimate edition. Still the booklet, the artwork and the bonus disc are really good! It's not listed anywhere but the Dvd you get is a feature length documentary called the "Frankenstein complex" and it's all about make up and model making from all fantasy films. It's cool but a shame it isn't a blu ray copy. I mean it's a blu ray 4k boxset!
