Zavvi - The Home of Pop Culture
The kids of Third Year Class-B Shiroiwa Junior High School are back, in a brand new 4K restoration of the classic cult shocker adapted from the controversial novel by Koushun Takami.
Presenting an alternate dystopian vision of turn-of-the-millennium Japan, Battle Royale follows the 42 junior high school students selected to take part in the government's annual Battle Royale programme, established as an extreme method of addressing concerns about juvenile delinquency. Dispatched to a remote island, they are each given individual weapons (ranging from Uzis and machetes to pan lids and binoculars), food and water, and the order to go out and kill one other.
Every player is fitted with an explosive collar around their neck, imposing a strict three-day time limit on the deadly games in which there can only be one survivor. Overseeing the carnage is 'Beat' Takeshi Kitano (Sonatine, Hana-bi, Zatoichi) as the teacher pushed to the edge by his unruly charges.
Playing like a turbo-charged hybrid of Lord of the Flies and The Most Dangerous Game, the final completed work by veteran yakuza film director Kinji Fukasaku (Battles without Honor and Humanity, Graveyard of Honor) helped launch a new wave of appreciation for Asian cinema in the 21st century.
Also included in the set is the incendiary sequel Battle Royale II, the directing debut of Kenta Fukasaku (after his father passed away during production), in which a new class of delinquents are recruited by the government to hunt down the survivor of the deadly games of the first film.

Superb collection with the main and all the sides being super tastey. Well worth a purchase even if you have the original as so much more added inc the 2 director cutsÂ

There is nothing more I can add to sway you into buying Battle Royale. In any edition, the film is a must own for all fans of cinema. A truly legendary motion picture experience. However, this Limited Edition is one of, if not the best boxset from Arrow Video to date. Containing a huge amount of extras, both on disc and physically. As well as combining the original movie in two versions, the set includes the often ignored sequel in two versions as well (which is unique to this particular boxset). If you do not own Battle Royale, this is the absolute must own version (as the 4K edition is OOP).
Report this reviewThe greatest box set of one of Japans finest movies
This is a great box set with both versions of the original, fantastic, Battle Royale with also both versions of the sequel included. The Top Trump cards are (keeping in tone with the film) to die for with a much detailed book included. Genuinely one of the best box sets you could buy of any movie let alone this cult classic
Report this reviewA set worth dying for
An excellent movie brought to life even more with the numerous extras. Arrow Movies have really outdone themselves here, this is a complete set, and really is worth the money. It should be noted this is the two movies, and overall, is worth the price; actually the price is a steep. The restoration to 4K is superb, and I advise anybody who already has this, but this upgrade, and to those who don’t it is a masterpiece. This will be a movie (well the first one) to stand the test of time
