Fantastic film, but.......

This is a great movie - it has a good story, good actors, a good script, excellent fx, and the 4k version is superb. There's only one BIG problem with this 4k movie - it's a US import. And the US censors have had their wicked way with it, editing out a full 10 minutes of the 4k movie compared to the blu ray version. And the 10 minutes they edit out, whilst not absolutely essential, have a definite impact on the story meaning I would MUCH rather watch the blu ray version any day of the week. Of course, the 4k comes with the blu ray version but what's the point if you're not going to watch the 4k, right? May as well just buy the blu ray version. Oh, and FWIW, the blu ray version is also excellent quality visually so you're not going to lose out in that department. What makes it really infuriating is that there are scenes in the 4k version that are every bit as "contentious" as the bits the US censor edited out so you have to ask yourself why?? Just utterly ridiculous! So, my recommendation would be NOT to buy the 4k and stick to the blu ray version. You've been warned!!

one to watch

The opening credits a reminiscent of ‘Lemony Snikett’ anf the fast driving music is likewise quirky. Instantly we know this is special. The entire story has been given that steam-punked edge with sleek costumes and snazzy weaponry. The special effects and make up are first class with good acting from all and a good clear picture quality. The disc opens to language selection of English or Netherlands, selection takes you to main screen offering play, set up [basically subtitles or audio description], special features [a single making of documentary] and scene selection. Rated at 15 it has everything, nudity, gratuitous swearing, bloody gory deaths, burning and head crushing and in many respects outdoes a lot of ‘dedicated horror’ movies, so this is definitely not one for the kiddies. If you like action with a comic twist -although the plot twists do seem rather obvious, and like the recent trend for giving everything a Victorians steampunked edge, you’ll probably love this, but if you want the traditional fairy-tale approach look elsewhere in my opinion.
