Now available in this 50 anniversary edition, Disney's Sword in the Stone is an enrapturing and much loved animated classic. A magical family experience, this Academy Award Nominee is now available in Blu-ray for the first time ever!

The film follows the enchanting story of a young Arthur (nicknamed Wart) and his mentor, the profoundly wise - if slightly senile - court wizard, Merlin. The wizened old mage knows that the future holds much for Arthur and sets about preparing him for a life much grander than he could ever know.

Revisiting an old classic

5 stars out of a maximum of 5

I remember loving this little Disney movie as a child. I say 'little' movie, as it isn't one that is often remembered by viewers. The story is based on the legend of Arthur and is told here as only Disney could tell it. The animation is good ole fashioned hand drawn Disney animation and features many of the voice cast that will be familiar to regular Disney movie goers of the time. To me this movie falls into the same category as say Robin Hood; both good fun movies that give the Disney treatment to stories that we have heard and seen retold time and time again. The songs from Sword in the Stone I find very memorable but I also don't find the film to reliant on songs which to be was always a plus. Some of the Disney movies, even the best loved ones, to me are too song heavy, so this film with its almost light spattering of songs is a delight. In terms of quality, the picture is reasonable though it of course doesn't compare to more recent offerings from the studio. The sound is solid and clean, however I can really only draw comparison from my memories of an old recording I had on video of a broadcast on ITV back in the late 80's. This was one of the few Disney animated classics that was always getting an airing on a Bank Holiday Monday. The extras however do let it down. Mainly a direct port from the previous releases, but a early version of an alternate beginning has been added, but none of this really warrants the 50th anniversary edition status, in my mind anyway. To sum up, a good movie that deserves to be revisited, and without a doubt should be considered.
