The first in a trilogy of films based on the enduring masterpiece The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey follows title character Bilbo Baggins, who - along with the Wizard Gandalf and 13 Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield - is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome Dragon Smaug. Their journey will take them into the Wild, through treacherous lands inhabited by Goblins, Orcs and deadly Wargs, as well as a mysterious and sinister figure known only as the Necromancer. Along the path, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of ingenuity and courage that surprise even himself, he also gains possession of a "precious" ring tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways he cannot begin to imagine.

Immerse yourself in Middle Earth!

5 stars out of a maximum of 5

I really enjoyed the first three Lord of the Rings films and saw them all in the cinema. I bought the DVDs, bought the extended edition Blu-ray box set and thought that was that. When I first heard that Peter Jackson and his team, including Guillermo del Toro (who was originally signed on to direct), where developing the Hobbit, I was a bit skeptical. This is a kids' book - nothing to compare with the Rings' trilogy. Then it was announced that the Hobbit would be split across 3 films. I could already hear the cash registers ringing and the sighs of disappointed movie-goers bemoaning such material being spread so thin. My faith was more than restored as pictures were released, casting decisions announced and Peter Jackson's return to the helmer's chair was made public. If anyone could pull this off, it was him and his team. Added to this was the fuss about 40 frames per second, digital 3D. I was actually nervous when I read the first reviews, which seemed to focus as much on this technology as on the film itself. Having seen the film in the cinema and now on this extremely rich, 3D Blu-Ray presentation, all I can say is, "roll on parts 2 and 3!" Anyone who hasn't seen this film but enjoyed the first trilogy should have no doubt - this is the return to Middle Earth, even as a prequel, that you have been waiting for. And Zavvi has the best deals on price!

If you love the other Lord of the Rings then you will love The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 3D (Includes UltraViolet Copy). Stick with it as the first 10 minutes I found to be a little slow, but after that it's like Lord of the Rings. It's action packed with great battles. The 3D gives great depth to this movie.

The Hobbit fell flat

3 stars out of a maximum of 5

Firstly, I ordered The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 3D from Zavvi and got it in super fast time. I have been using Zavvi off and on for a while now and I have to say, their delivery has improved greatly! As for the first instalment of the Hobbit, it's a bit slow to start but, got kind of better. Some of the trolls look like they were taken from Harry Potter and the Goblins... another poor attempt. But on a positive note, the 3D is okay, nothing new but just okay. I would recommend borrowing it or renting first before buying.

Good to be back

I'll keep it simple. If you loved The Lord of the Rings you'll love The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 3D. I really enjoyed being back in Middle Earth and didn't find it too long or boring like some reviewers have stated. The sequels can't come quick enough.

Excellent film and the 3d is just as good on the TV as at the cinema.
