Japanese Animation

The birth of anime can be traced back to the late 1910s. During this time, Ōten Shimokawa, Jun'ichi Kōuchi, and Seitaro Kitayama — commonly referred to as the ‘fathers’ of anime — made a huge impact on the animation industry, releasing a number of short films.

In the 1960s, the cartoonist Osamu Tezuka revolutionised anime with releases such as Astro Boy, Princess Knight, Kimba The White Lion, Black Jack, Phoenix, and Buddha. His works helped establish a distinctive art style, which became immensely popular both domestically and overseas. Nowadays, anime has a massive following that spans the entire globe and comprises people of all ages.

You may recognise some of the most popular franchises: One Piece, Dragon Ball Z, Pokémon, Naruto, Death Note, Sailor Moon, Detective Conan, Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Angel Beats.
