An Award-Winning Film

Inside Out is a computer-animated film, which was released in 2015 by Walt Disney Pictures. The story was crafted by director Pete Docter and co-director Ronni del Carmen, after Docter observed his daughter’s personality developing as she grew older.

Through consulting with psychologists, such as Dacher Keltner, they were able to develop the story with real-life neuropsychological findings – related to the interaction between emotion and interpersonal relationships.

The film focuses on a young girl by the name of Riley (Kaitlyn Dias), who is forced to move to San Francisco for her father’s new job. Inside her head are five core emotions, personified as Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Bill Hader), and Disgust (Mindy Kaling).

After Joy and Sadness are accidently sent to long-term storage, this leaves the remaining three emotions in control – resulting in Riley’s life taking a downturn.

Exploring Riley’s memories, Joy finally learns the purpose of Sadness, and the pair return to the headquarters to put Riley’s life back together – allowing Sadness to take control.
