Created by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes is a fictional private detective and the eponymous hero of various novels and short stories. The character first appeared in Doyle’s A Study In Scarlet (1887) and has since featured in various adaptations.

Holmes is recognised for having an extremely high IQ as well as proficiencies in observation, deduction, forensic science, and logical reasoning. Combined, these abilities make him into a world-class detective.

In 2010, a modern-day interpretation of the character was portrayed in a BBC TV series titled Sherlock. The show starred Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson. Together, they investigate and solve crimes in London while contending with the machinations of the deranged — but undeniably genius — Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott).

Another popular adaptation comes in the form of a film series, which began in 2008 with Sherlock Holmes. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law took on the lead roles (as Holmes and Watson, respectively) and later reprised their characters in the 2011 sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows. The first instalment centred around the emergence of a serial killer and proclaimed ‘sorcerer’ called Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong), whereas the second film introduced Sherlock’s popular nemesis, Moriarty (Jared Harris).
