In the Marvel Universe, there are many different Spider-Men. The first and most well-known iteration is Peter Parker, who received his spectacular abilities — clinging to walls, supernatural senses, strength, agility, and more — after being bitten by a radioactive arachnid. Initially, he revels in his new-found physical prowess, dressing in a fanciful costume and becoming a minor celebrity. However, everything changes when Uncle Ben, a father figure of sorts, is killed by a criminal whom Peter allowed to escape. The grieving teenager quickly learns the lesson that power also begets the need for responsibility, and he vows to honour his uncle’s memory by protecting the citizens of New York City. To this end, he becomes a superhero, combatting the ill-intentioned villains who prey on the weak: the Green Goblin (Norman Osborn), Doctor Octopus (Otto Octavius), Vulture (Adrian Toomes), Sandman (Flint Marko), Rhino (Aleksei Mikhailovich Sytsevich), and Scorpion (Mac Gargan) — to name a few.

Although Peter is synonymous with the title, the role of the Web-Slinger has been adopted by several individuals, some of whom exist in the core 616 universe, while others hail from alternate realities. This concept was explored in an animated film called Into The Spider-Verse (2018), which turned the spotlight to Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore), Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-Ham (John Mulaney), SP//dr (Kimiko Glenn), and Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage). Each of these heroes possesses qualities that are similar to those of Peter, but overt differences — such as their being of a different species or time period — make them stand apart.
