It’s-A-Me

The successor to the arcade game Mario Bros., Super Mario made the transition to the NES console in 1985. This marked the eponymous character’s first appearance in a 2D side-scrolling game and established many of the game mechanics that fans have come to relish. Since the release of the first instalment, there have been more than 30 Super Mario games.

Joining alongside Mario on his many adventures is an eclectic cast of personalities: Luigi (Mario’s brother), Bowser (the chief villain in the series), Princess Peach (damsel in distress and certified love interest of Mario), Toad (a mushroom-headed companion to Mario), Yoshi (a green dinosaur), Wario (Mario’s arch-rival), Donkey Kong (the original villain), Birdo (a pink-coloured companion to Yoshi), and loads more.

Throughout the series, our favourite plumber embarks on many adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom. Players are required to navigate various levels while facing a raft of enemies and environmental obstacles, using Mario’s skills of jumping and obtaining different power ups. Said power ups grant numerous abilities, such as throwing fireballs and becoming temporarily invincible.
