The films tell the story of the overly optimistic and constantly singing Trolls and their counterparts the Bergens, who are only happy when they have Trolls on their dinner plate. To consume their happiness, the Bergens imprison the Trolls and eat them every year on a special occasion known as the Trollstice. However, their captives manage to escape using underground tunnels.

Princess Poppy (Kendrick) throws a big party twenty years later to celebrate the historic moment, but her actions lead the banished Chef (Baranski) to their location. Chef kidnaps some of her friends, forcing her to embark on a rescue mission.

In the sequel, Poppy and her friend Branch (Timberlake) discover that they are but one of six different Troll tribes. Each of the tribes lives on its own land and devotes itself to a unique form of music: funk, country, techno, classical, pop, and rock. Queen Barb (Bloom), a member of hard-rock royalty, wants to destroy all other genres so that rock can reign supreme. To prevent their imminent destruction, Poppy and Branch must unify the Trolls against her.
