This classic slice of Hollywood glamour from Joseph L. Mankiewicz (All About Eve, People Will Talk) won him the Academy Award for Best Director.
Jeanne Crain, Linda Darnell and Ann Sothern play three suburban housewives with very different marriages: one stable, one in a marriage of convenience and the other trapped in a relationship riddled by lies and suspicion. They are brought together by a strange letter which unexpectedly arrives one day from the resident siren, Addie Ross. In it, she informs them that she's leaving town for good - and she's taking out of their husbands with her.
As the women mull over the letter, jealously and suspicion flare as they think over their lives with their husbands, only to come to the conclusion that any one of the men could easily have left with Ms. Ross.
With an Academy Award-winning screenplay and excellent performances from an ensemble which includes Kirk Douglas and Thelma Ritter, this oft-neglected gem is a sharp study of suburban life and one of Mankiewicz's best.
