The first feature film by the distinguished Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away). The Castle of Cagliostro also marks the latest instalment in the hugely popular Lupin III animated TV series, of which Miyazaki had written and directed a number of episodes.
Here, our iconic super-thief Lupin pulls off a thrilling heist at a Monte Carlo casino, only to discover the spoils are counterfeit. Lupin traces the fake bills to the country of Cagliostro where an evil Count is generating forged money and distributing it worldwide. With partners in tow (including a retired gangster, a modern-day samurai, and a beautiful female thief) Lupin heads to Caligostro where he also finds a promise of hidden treasure and Clarice, a beautiful Princess in need of rescuing from the Court's dastardly clutches.
Maintaining the lineage of the Lupin III franchise, Miyazaki also imbues the proceedings with his customary wit and sense of the romantic - Miyazaki's heroes are always ready to come to the aid of a damsel in distress. Moreover, the film is lovingly detailed with the storybook kingdom of Cagliostro being beautifully redolent of the director's equally inspired later works.

Castle Of Cagliostro
If you like adventure, comedy, romance and a plot with several twists then this is the film for you! A lighthearted story that is both entertaining and well thought out.The characters are both likeable and convincing, villains included! Castle of Cagliostro contatins all the elements that makes any big screen action adventure worth watching. There is the irrascible hero who flouts conventon at any given opportunity, but maybe his occupation as a renown jewel thief is a big indicator of this particular character trait! As the lead character, his anitics provides the scope for the misadventure that shapes this story. The hero is supported superbly by not one but two under-appreciated sidekicks, whose wisdom, warnings and dry humour provide the comedy in trying to save the lead character from himself! There is the unscrupulous and arrogant villain who rules with an fist and will stop at nothing to achieve his own ambitions, and finally the beautiful and wilful heroine who provides the not only the love interest but the highs and lows associated with path of true love. The story is fluid and rarely remains static, a classic anime adventure that is well worth watching
