The hugely popular ITV Drama Downton Abbey.
Downton is the home of the Crawleys, who have been the Earls of Grantham since 1772. The family live in oppulence with tall windows looking across the park. Below stairs at Downton live the servants; some loyal to the family and committed to Downton, and others just moving through, on the look out for new opportunities, love or adventure. The Crawleys know so little about the lives of their staff, but the servants hold both the family's secrets and their own.

I bought this as I didn't watch the first Series. However I have been following the second and both my husband and I loved it so thought we must see this series. Brilliant!
Set in England in the years leading up to the First World War, Downton Abbey tells the story of the Crawley family for many generations. but it is also spotlights where their servants live, love laugh and play Little do the people that inhabit Downton know, that the clouds of war that will bring marked change are already gathering over their heads. ITV have excelled themselves with such a lavish drama and stellar cast. Dame Maggie Smith delivers and is a tour de force. Every episode makes you look to forward to the next instalment.
The whole first series of Downton Abbey was very enjoyable. A great DVD.
This is a must for anyone who like me has been watching from the second series. Unlike most series, this one is top quality right from the opening title on the very first episode.
Downton Abbey Series 1 is a must see. The series catches the mood of the times and leads you through the historical events of the early 20th century. It's a perfect watch when your curled up on the sofa with a cold or on a rainy afternoon. Maggie Smith will have you in stitches with her dry quick wit and is totally believeable, in fact all the cast play believeable characters. It was a joy to watch and I would recommend it.
This is a really excellant box set of series 1. My wife will watch this over and over again, particularly enjoying the beautifull costumes and for the professionalism of the acting. What better way to enjoy the dark winter evenings.
Brilliant DVD if you were a fan of the series, and not doubt will get series2 when it comes out. Delivery from Zavvi was 1st class and reliable. Good bargain all round.
Downton Abbey is an enjoyable drama written by Julian Fellowes which is very watchable and a must for anyone who wants to see the best of British actors indulging themselves in a romantic view of post- Edwardian Britain. The series begins with the tragedy of the sinking of The Titanic which has implications for the eventual ownership of Downton Abbey. Both above stairs , the Duke of Grantham and his family, and the servants belowstairs are very cliched but the story and the backdrop of Highclere Castle provide a winning combination. Fans of Gosford Park and Dame Maggie Smith will love it.
Downton Abbey is another in a long line of great period dramas from ITV. There's humour, drama, tragedy, and even the legal matter of the entail (not noted for its entertainment value) is presented in an engaging way. Dame Maggie Smith has all the best lines - which is exactly as it should be - but the whole cast is excellent, and the writing by Julian Fellowes as good as ever. A must buy.
Brilliant series that had me glued to the TV
I'm not normally a fan of this style of TV show, but to my surprise I am a total Downton Addict!! With its plot twists and fun characters, I just can't wait to see the next episode each time I watch it...very funny and clever, interesting to learn of different times too!
This period drama is superb, you never know what is going to happen next and the acting is excellent. Whilst the main plot follows the lives of The Granthams, the stories of the servants are also interweaved showing a fascinating insight to life in a grand country house in Edwardian times. It certainly keeps me guessing and I can't wait to see each new episode.
I've been watching the series on ITV1 and have already put in a pre-order. This is one of the best period drama offerings for a while. It's just saucy enough to attract those who hate anything with costumes, and a clever use of small screen talents. Dame Maggie Smith is wonderful as the dowager countess, and definitely watchable enough to justify buying on DVD!
The first episode is full of promise, Maggie Smith is excellent, as always. In a nutshell, the heir to the estate has been killed on the Titanic and the story is starting to progress as to who the daughters of the estate could marry to save the family.
Beautifully set, fantastic writing and an amazing cast - all in all one of the best period pieces in a long long time *****
Sumptuous costume drama, full of well known faces and much loved cast. Delves into the lives of the Crawley family and it's servants in the years leading up to World War 1. Another excellent drama series which is well worth adding to any collection. Released on 8 November, it will make an excellent Christmas present for all the family.
