As good as it gets. A perfect blend of lives in a large household of the time, never a dull moment!
Downton is just great! Highly recommended.
Well, what can I say, having watched Downton Abbey on the TV & all the family have really enjoyed it, I decided that it would be a good idea to buy the individual series on DVD as they become available & then, possible in a year or so's time, watch them all again. For those of you who have never seen Downton, it is a period drama set in a northern Stately Home & Estate, somewhat similar to the old Upstairs, Downstairs. Downton really does drag you into the plots & characters & it is a series that you wish would be on for longer than its hour long episodes. Well worth buying & watching in my humble opinion.
In my opinion this has to be one of the finest series that I have ever watched and Series 4, is the jewel in the crown. Excellent story, well written and with a cast of actors unparalleled.
somewhere along the line i got pensive of turning to the next episode/chapter of "downton abbey". dont worry, it happened somewhere in series two or three. there i nothing wrong with this extremely amiable melodrama. in fact it is excellent. excellent casting, excellent acting, clever, witty scripting, beautiful actors, sexy too, warm, touching, human, humorous, all delicately set off by the finery of a period long gone, the buildings, the autos, the dresses - oh my the dresses!!! no matter what you thought of the nobility, this programme is sure to seduce you of all your grave misgivings as it sucks you in to the thrill of the rollercoaster ride you're gonna get as we follow their not always delicate or refined trials and tribulations. and its reassuring to see that we can feel sympathy even for the most privileged, isnt it? in spite of all the politics, this is a tale of human beings doing things that human beings do, warts and all. maggie smith is superb (as usual), but even she can not outshine the rest of the cast. there are so many likable characters in this programme that you cant not find at least someone who'll sweep you off your feet or bring you to their attention. this is one series where you can still be surprised by the characters actions and responses, even after watching every episode, following every twist and turn, and getting the feeling that you know the personalities of everyone by now - be prepared to be surprised. even with all the pacifying nostalgia for a time when things seemed more stable and clear, when social codes seemed clear and unbreakable, there is something really really gripping about this programme. quite the best thing i have seen since discovering "a touch of frost". a must.
i purchased this for a supprise for my wife as she is an avid fan.
