Gus Van Sant's long unavailable and now fully restored first feature film, Mala Noche marks an auspicious debut feature from the director of Elephant and Paranoid Park.
Walt (Tim Streeter) is working in a liqueur store when he encounters two handsome Mexicans, Johnny and Pepper. Immediately, Walt develops an obsession with Johnny, who is an illegal immigrant with little knowledge of English. The desire may be one-sided but it soon becomes a friendship of mutual needs and desires.
Originally released back in 1985, its striking black and white photography and fascinating depiction of its characters lives garnered the burgeoning director early acclaim, winning the 1987 Los Angeles Film Critics' Best Independent/Experimental Film Award.
